Indexicality and Representation

چکیده

In the vast majority of cases linguistic comprehension does not care much about what there is in the world and what state the world is in. Comprehension is often satisfied with satisfaction: you have understood somebody’s statement once you have set up a model that satisfies the statement. But occasionally reality matters. When Albert confesses to Bob: “I ́m having an affair with your wife”, and Bob ́s comprehension goes no further than constructing a model that satisfies Albert’s statement, i.e. a model in which a speaker is having an affair with his listener ́s wife, then there is nothing that could make Albert nervous or that could make Bob jalous. Merely constructing a model does not link the statement to the world. But how do we model this step from a model to real life, from “I” or “you” to a real person? A proposal sketched near the end of this paper is that – despite first appearance – we don’t and we needn’t.

Lecture 4: From the Linguistic Model to Semiotic Ecology: Structure and Indexicality in Pictures and in the Perceptual World

The argument of our third lecture showed that iconicity could only be saved from the critical arguments advanced by Bierman and Goodman by means of introducing a properly structured common sense world. In this lecture, we will first consider to what extent the linguistic model may still be helpful, and in which respects it is misleading. Then the necessary furnishing of the common sense world, ...

Semiotics and the social analysis of material things

This article discusses certain aspects of Peircean semiotics as they can contribute to the social analysis of material artifacts. It focuses on the concepts of iconicity and indexicality, paying particular attention to their roles in mediating contingency and causality, and to their relation with possible actions. Because iconicity and indexicality themselves ‘assert nothing,’ their various soc...

Indexicality and left-periphery

According to recent proposals in formal syntax, the left-most position in the C(omplementizer)-layer is dedicated to the representation of the context of utterance (call this hypothesis LP). This idea has had little impact on semantic theories of indexicals. The reason is that indexicals are regarded, after Kaplan’s (1989) Logic of Demonstratives (LD), as directly referential and rigid. However...

Nonindexical contextualism

Philosophers on all sides of the contextualism debates have had an overly narrow conception of what semantic context sensitivity could be. They have conflated context sensitivity (dependence of truth or extension on features of context) with indexicality (dependence of content on features of context). As a result of this conflation, proponents of contextualism have taken arguments that establis...

Indexical order and the dialectics of sociolinguistic life

The concept of indexical order is introduced, necessary to any empirical investigation of the inherently dialectical facts of indexicality. Indexical order is central to analyzing how semiotic agents access macro-sociological plane categories and concepts as values in the indexable realm of the micro-contextual. Through such access their relational identities are presupposed and creatively (tra...
